Digital Planning Basics

So you’re ready to jump into digital planning!

Welcome to the addiction…hahaha. 🙂

These instructions for digital planning basics are for digital planning on an iPad, because the digital planning explosion started with the GoodNotes app, but it’s of course spreading to other devices & other apps. I’ll do a separate set of instructions for Android apps.

TOOLS NEEDED

To get started with digital planning, here is what you need:

  • An iPad (you can use a smartphone, but the screen is just too small to work, in my opinion! I want to see all the stickers, lol!)
  • You don’t need an Apple pencil, but it sure does help/makes it a bit easier to move items around on the screen
  • The app GoodNotes

THE SUPER SIMPLE WAY TO START DIGITAL PLANNING

Ok, so you’ve got GoodNotes on your iPad & you’re ready to go.

You can buy lots of various digital planners online (and soon in my shop too), but if you just want to try out a very easy way to start planning, all you need is GoodNotes & some digital planner stickers.

STEP 1: GET SOME STICKERS

Get some digital stickers (any of them from anywhere will do).

STEP 2: PUT THE STICKERS IN A HANDY SPOT & MAKE THEM EASY TO ACCESS

Decide where you’ll keep all your digital stickers for easy access: the two easy ones to use are either a Dropbox account or your iCloud account. Go ahead & put your digital stickers in there so they’re ready to use (you’ll see why I recommend this in a moment).

On your iPad, go to the main screen, find your Files app, and tap and hold the Files app icon and drag it down to your iPad’s bottom launcher bar.

STEP 3: OPEN GOODNOTES AND CREATE A NOTEBOOK

Open the GoodNotes app.

Click the plus sign icon, then choose “notebook.”

Choose a cover & pages, whatever you’d like (you can also change these later).

Click the “Create” button to create the notebook.

Now you’ll have a blank page…you can write on the page and start making notes, but let’s add stickers!

STEP 4: ADD STICKERS

ADD STICKERS METHOD 1: Click the image icon at the top of the screen, and when the add image window opens, navigate to where you have your stickers waiting (either in your Dropbox account or your iCloud folder). Click a sticker to use, and GoodNotes will import it into the notebook.

ADD STICKERS METHOD 2: With your notebook open, take your finger and slightly drag up from the bottom of the screen to display the launcher bar…tap and hold the Files app icon, and drag it up and to the right (or left) of the screen to create the split-screen effect (I then resize that 2nd screen to be narrower). Navigate in the Files app to where you have your stickers…now all you need to do is tap, hold, and drag each sticker onto your notebook! 🙂 This is my preferred method for bringing in many stickers at once…it’s just faster and easier than importing them one at a time via the button.

TIP: Once you pull in one sticker, and you see the little red “x” on its top left corner and the little “resize” icon on its bottom right corner, this means that that sticker is “selected”…before you pull in another sticker, be sure to tap somewhere else on the notebook page to deselect that sticker, or else when you pull a new one in, the new one will replace that one that was selected.

STEP 5: MOVE & RESIZE & PLAY!

Once you’ve got stickers on a page…they’re probably not the correct size. Tap each one one at a time to select it, then look for the little round icon in the bottom right of the sticker…use that to resize it and rotate it. You can then tap and hold the middle of the sticker to move it around the page. (Note: This is where using an Apple pencil really comes in handy!)

From this point, all you need to do to plan is…write down some plans! 🙂 Of course digital planning can, and often does, look JUST like paper planning with a premade set of calendar pages with months, weeks, and days laid out. But when you’re just wanting to get started, all you need are some stickers & the GoodNotes app & you’re set. 🙂
